Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) Parameters

Written by Ingmar Verheij on July 12th, Posted in DemystifiedOther. DHCP servers can send vendor specific options to clients to granularly control configuration. Since this applications only run on Microsoft Windows its no more than logical to only send this option to Windows clients. The vendor class is used by DHCP clients to optionally identify the vendor and configuration.

Examples of vendor classes are:. The structure is pretty simple: the first byte contains the option code 43 [or 0x2B in hex], the second byte the length of the package followed by one or more options. Each option i n i1, i2, etc has same basic structure: the first byte contains the options codethe second byte the length of the package followed by the value of the option. That means that each option i n i1, i2, etc. By default only optionand are available for Microsoft Windows Options but these can be extended via the context menu of the protocol stack IPv4 or IPv6 and selecting Set Predefined Options.

The DHCP offer received contains multiple options including subnetMask [1], domainName [15], domainNameServer [6] and the vendor specific option [43] just like in the example diagram is shown. Wireshark does show this information. Though this is not mentioned in the RFC they are required for the DHCP client to identify the end of the option allowing the client to separate the options.

The value is send as hexadecimal byte values. Translating the hex values to string can be done here and from string to hex here. The script can be found here. The options can be set in a subclass where you can filter on the vendor class identifier. Below you can find an example configuration presenting the same vendor specific options as in previous examples. As the vendor specific information is considered an opaque data type the user must define the option data in the raw format.

With a VitalQIP appliance the vendor specific information can be provided in two ways:. Source : cisco. For example:. NET application that does that for you. The usage is straightforward: just add the options, specify a separator or not and click Generate. You can download the tool here: CreateVendorSpecificString. Once you have Sky Fibre the install wizard picks up all their settings perfectly anyway including Option 61so I shouldn't worry. We've recently switched from BT to Sky Fibre and I'm not getting great performance on streaming video.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Would it be possible for someone to post the basic internet setup config page from their router please as I'm guessing its just a simple selection I'm making wrong. Search 'extract sky user details with wireshark' on either google or youtube and you will find guides on how to do it. Once you have this put this in the option 61 Vendor ID string section of the D internet set up screen and you should be able to authenticate on the sky network afterwards.

To configure manual bindings, you must enter the client-identifier DHCP pool configuration command with the appropriate hexadecimal values identifying the DHCP client. Mostly because that's what the specs say you should use. While the client-id will almost always include or entirely be a MAC, it's a bad habit as NICs do sometimes get replaced failures, upgrades, etc.

Most DHCP clients allow the user to specify an identifier. BOOTP has no choice, as it has no such option s.

I have an R running standard firmware v1. In particular to get around the known open vpn bug in the netgear firmware. I have my R connected using the DCHP client string option 61 which I sniffed from the box that they supplied, I'm also spoofing the mac address although I don't think this is a requirement.

Lots of searching suggests it was definitely possible around but the information that I can find since then seems to suggest that this is not possible in the latest builds? I will backup and follow the guides on here to flash but I want to be confident before going forward. Well that didn't go well. I couldn't even flash the router. Tried latest builds of Kong and Vox but in both cases the netgear gui said incorrect firmware.

Managed to flash the latest Kong build on to another I had. But I can't establish a connection. Where xxxxxx is my client identifier sniffed from the sky box that I've been running successfully in my stock R Doesn't look like I'm going to be able to use dd wrt to connect to SKY using their MER protocol, which is a shame as it worked in previous builds for other users. I got a lot of help from these users that allowed me to successfully create my login service string for the R If you look at my post of there is a pdf file attached to it with some instructions that may prove useful they have worked for at least one other person if you read through thread.

The big long hex string was generated from converting a generic sky username and password my actual ones weren't needed. I'd like to do this in Voxel because I prefer the stock firmware, but can't seem to work out how to enter a command. It would be nice to see it in either, becuase if the connection goes down I have to re-enter and run the command.

There is a thread in SNB forums re: how to enable it in my fw:. I've had a look through the instructions, is it possible to modify the net-wan file using telnet? I suggest you start with backing up the current configuration and download the image-file of your current router Firmware.

Then it is just a matter of minutes to restore the router. Your 4 values can be obtained from using wireshark and label on sky equipment.

Now you must reboot the router. However I would prefer Voxel, but cannot follow the method on SNB because I cannot work out how to create the keys and transfer them to the router withuot a Linux machine??

Anything you want to transfer is easily done by puting it on a USB-stick and insert in the router. For the 7 commands I gave above, you can just copy one line at a time from your windows? That will take you a few minutes. Also there is no risk of "bricking" the R Whatever wrong you do you can get it working again with "a "tftp"-session. Don't be afraid to try! I wish you good luck with it. I have no idea how it's worked but the last thing I did was restore the original net-wan file and rebooted.

So the idea is that do not send the content of option 43 to clients that do not need it and we defined the clients using VCI in option If you do not specify an option 60 for some scope, the content of option 43 is returned to any DHCP client asking for an IP address in that subnet. Need this for a PWLAN service where I have to source the radius request from the same interface as the clients are inDHCP can be implemented on networks ranging in size from home networks to large campus networks and regional Internet service provider networks.

However, because it acted at the data link layer it made implementation difficult on many server platforms, and also required that a server be present on each individual network link.

It can also be used to deliver a wide range of extra configuration parameters to IP clients, including platform-specific parameters. Internet Protocol IP defines how devices communicate within and across local networks on the Internet. DHCP operates based on the client—server model. Any DHCP server on the network may service the request. The DHCP server manages a pool of IP addresses and information about client configuration parameters such as default gatewaydomain namethe name serversand time servers.

On receiving a DHCP request, the DHCP server may respond with specific information for each client, as previously configured by an administrator, or with a specific address and any other information valid for the entire network and for the time period for which the allocation lease is valid.

A DHCP client typically queries for this information immediately after bootingand periodically thereafter before the expiration of the information. When a DHCP client refreshes an assignment, it initially requests the same parameter values, but the DHCP server may assign a new address based on the assignment policies set by administrators.

SKY Broadband / DHCP Option 61?

On large networks that consist of multiple links, a single DHCP server may service the entire network when aided by DHCP relay agents located on the interconnecting routers. While both versions serve the same purpose, the details of the protocol for IPv4 and IPv6 differ sufficiently that they may be considered separate protocols. IPv6 hosts may also use link-local addressing to achieve operations restricted to the local network link. UDP port number 67 is the destination port of a server, and UDP port number 68 is used by the client.

These stages are often abbreviated as DORA for discovery, offer, request, and acknowledgement. The DHCP operation begins with clients broadcasting a request.

Clients requesting renewal of an existing lease may communicate directly via UDP unicastsince the client already has an established IP address at that point. For those hosts which cannot accept unicast packets before IP addresses are configured, this flag can be used to work around this issue. If the client remains connected to the same network, the server may grant the request. Otherwise, it depends whether the server is set up as authoritative or not.

An authoritative server denies the request, causing the client to issue a new request. A non-authoritative server simply ignores the request, leading to an implementation-dependent timeout for the client to expire the request and ask for a new IP address.

Some options are set as well.Have the devs had any thought of including this in a non beta firmware from what I've been reading or will it never happen?

I also used the DMZ option on the modem - is there a reason you would not want to do this? I was looking at previous posts where some Fibre users has beta firmware with that option in. The only reason is I don't like that setup, is because it seems a mess nothing against yourself or other fibre users. I would really like the XR but just puts me off the fact I can't use it without having basically two routers hooked up using DMZ.

Hence why I wanted just to use the XR if I bought one, it is possible to ditch Sky equipment all together. I'm sure they can implement 60 too, web interface only allowing 61 though, can probably do 60 manually. Thanks for helping xruser. Recommended Posts.
